Demand for desalinated water is projected to more than double from
132.9 million per year in 2009 to
320.6 million by 2016
This demand will be fueled by population growth and social development as well
as an active policy by the government to move away from groundwater as a source
of potable water supply. A further need for large-sized desalination plants has been
identified to help meet demand.
Sembcorp Salalah, has invested approximately US$1bn to develop, finance, build, own
and operate the Salalah Independent Water and Power Plant. With water capacity of
69,000 cubic metres per day the plant is expected to meet the majority of water
demands for the Dhofar region.
